I think it's unlikely the broken piece fell into the spark plug hole-- the
plug was in the hole when the porcelain broke. If you were using a spark
plug socket with a neoprene insert, it definitely didn't fall in.

If you can view down the hole, shine a small flashlight in and see what you
can see...

I'd say it was bad news to try..

I'm no mechanic so I won't post you advice on how to fix it but my dad once had a fool mechanic drop a small socket from a socket set down the spark plug hole, didn't tell anyone and when the motor was started it smashed the piston completly and after 5 seconds the motor siezed never to start again.

My advice is get good advice before you go anyware near the ignition key, the cost of removing the head to check is far less than a new motor.

The first thing you should do is turn the engine by hand on the crankshaft pulley bolt, If there is anything in the combustion chamber the engine will lock up, if not it should be safe to turn it on the key.
