I must come into the penny pincher category because more than once I've used
old pads on new discs if the pads were relatively unworn.
Not an option available to many, but I ground the pads flat on a surface
grinder before fitting.

The same result could probably be obtained by flattening the friction
surface by hand on a sheet of course emery cloth. Making sure the pads
finished up reasonably parallel.
No asbestos in modern pads so it's safe from that POV but probably just as
well to use a face mask to avoid breathing the dust.
