Dr John Woods
James Bob

these are both scammers

Admin note

They will try to sound important, they like to pretend to be DR, they also like to have a name that is 2 first names. You will also be hurried to reply - they add a sense of urgency to the enquiry. Will make out they are business men visiting many countries.

Iain
P.S they probably smell too!

Hi,

If it is people from the UK that have been scammed then the Metropolitan police recommend this action

...You receive a 419 letter or e-mail
DO NOT REPLY UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES !

If you receive a 419 letter, throw it in the bin where it deserves to be. The fraudsters have not targeted you personally, 1000’s of these letters are sent out daily to people worldwide whose details have been taken at random from telephone directories etc.

If you receive a 419 letter by e-mail, do not reply, again they have not targeted you personally. Cause them some inconvenience by forwarding a copy of the e-mail to the Internet Service Provider from where the e-mail originated in the following format.
For example:-
abuse@hotmail.com
abuse@yahoo
abuse@compuserve.com

Unless your letter/e-mail contains details of the fraudsters bank accounts/addresses/telephone numbers please do not forward them to us. If you live outside the United Kingdom please send your e-mail/letter to your own National Police Unit that deals with Fraud. If there is a London connection they can pass the matter onto Interpol London for action.

If you have already become embroiled in this scam, contact your own police department or your local embassy if you are abroad.

Special Instructions relating to US Citizens.
If you are in the United Kingdom and are the victim or potential victim of such a fraud contact the US Secret Service, US Embassy, London on 020 7408 8091. If you are elsewhere in the World contact the US Embassy relevant to the country you are in or your local Secret Service Office.

Remember: "If it sounds too good to be true, then it is!"

Should I be happy that my car sold or sad that someone has attempted to scam me?

First, let me thank you for your website. I'm sure it has helped a lot of people.

I put my car up for sale on AutoTrader: had a few interested lookers. Then I received an email from a guy in the UK (If the check doesn't clear, I'll give his name). You know how it goes, the classic poor grammar and missplelled words; offering to buy sight unseen; pay more and have me wire the excess to his shipper via Western Union.

I received the M/O which was drawn on a bank in Florida, but mailed from an address in Michigan. I deposited it today. I was suspicious, but it looked legit. I emailed my UK friend or fiend and his reply was more polished and rather businesslike. He wanted to close the deal ASAP. He even told me where the closest Western Union office was.

My radar went on, antennas fully extended so I went searching the internet for scam profiles. Google turned up this site..

But I still want the check to be good and to sell that car. Probably, wishful thinking. The (a)moral of the story is that they are using accomplices in the U.S. Make sure those checks clear. I'm going to talk to my bank officers tomorrow.

Peace,
André :D :( :x

I had an email from martins2jo@elvis.com which was very badly spelt etc asked for my address etc and if the car was still for sale (thought it was dodgy), but replied with very little info to him (no address!) and asked questions of him that he didnt answer, and he then replied to me saying that he would have the car and he wanted to pay by cheque and arrange with his guy in germany to collect the car and ship it to him. NO WAY!!
i told him the car was now sold.

someone offered to buy my car.One of his clients were apparantly in this country and would send me a cheque for £5600(£4400 more than i was asking for my car)I was then asked to send the remaining money as soon as i recieved the cheque. When i recieved the cheque i found that it was made out to me but it came from a prison service. How dodgy is that.I have took a copy of this cheque and will be going to the police as i know its not gonna cash.Watch out for someone from western africa wanting the money sent through western union money transfer to another company.who was supposed to be picking the car up.The address of the so called shipper is oceanic_pacificliner@yahoo.com.The man who is supposed to be buying the car is james. His address is james983@bolt.com.Let me know if anyone else has been scammed by the same person.

I just had the same situation happen that was mentioned earlier. I had an e-mail response from somebody with broken up english. Anyways we worked out a deal and I was supposed to forward the remainder of a check to a shipping company in Europe. Got a cashiers check in the mail and actually forwarded it. Luckily for me I realized this tonight at 2 am what happened and was able to stop teh western union before they could pick it up wherever they are. Here are names to avoid

Tony Jackson
Lucky Campbell
Grace Duke

Beware of MSC Ocean Liners and Zenith Holding

They all used free e-mail accounts. fastermail and elvis.com

Hope this can help people out. I was saved in the nick of time. Hope it works for you too.

Wow you cut a fine line on that one! Out of interest was the car listed on this site? Where were you to wire the money to?

Cheers and well done - there is one unhappy scammer who got so close to the money only to lose it!

I am selling two cars at the moment and found out that scammers don’t even bother to change the text of their e-mail to the same seller for 2 different cars, so if you get mails similar to this, don’t waste your time – I have double checked them – they lie ….and do not care if the air con is working well. Always remember –you will never get real money out of them – you can only lose your own and even your car!

I'm not certain that the following are DEFINITELY scams but thought I'd share just in case.

The thing I've noticed with a lot of these scammers mails is something very obvious. If they have supposedly read the advert why then do their mails almost always ask "What is the condition" and "what is the price"?

The following are the most recent mails I've had.

From:merle_branterson@yahoo.com <merle_branterson@yahoo.com>
HELLO I GOT YOUR ADVERT ON YOUR FOR SALE{car} AND AM READY TO BUY IT FROM YOU AT THAT AMOUNT{price needed}.I WILL WANT YOU TO GET BACK TO ME WITH THE PRESENT CONDITION OF THIS SO THAT I CAN ARRANGE FOR PAYMENT IN TIME .HOPING TO READ FROM

in excellent condition, bodywork is good, underneath is sound - it's good
all round for the year. Very clean & tidy.
Feel free to mail me direct if you are interested.

So that's one example. other names I am suspicious of.

This first one I am now even more convinced since reading some of your comments, particularly the trend of using two christian names..

I had several emails from:garald@fastermail.com.

First:

Hello seller,
In ref to your advert on the auto trader site I will like to know more about the car please I will want you to send me the history details as well as the your final asking price is you can still step down and if any more recent pictures to the one on the advert, I will like to is it.
Am Mr. Garald I base in Spain and my shipping company will make the shipment of the car all I want to make sure that the car is in good condition before I make any payment?
Your mail will be acknowledged.
Regards

I replied, as was slightly confused...

second:

Good day,

Thanks for your mail, so I have decided to get the CAR, and am pleased with the price at £11250 I got in touch with the person that is making out payment for the van and he said I should get to you first on how the payment will be made that it will be in Bankers draft I don’t mind the draft clearing into your account before I get the CAR since the company is paying for CAR.

So I want to know if I can trust you over this transaction sending the remaining balance that will be left to the shipping company that will handle the shipping of the CAR to my location, because I’ll be sending a Bankers draft of £14,000. And since I have made the choose to buy the CAR it all base on you, trusting you with the remain money.

Well if yes, to start with the procurement of the Bankers draft, I will need the
following information from you:
Your full address.....................
Street ................................
City/town ..................................
State, ....................................
Country and post code,............
your phone number ............
Name to be written on the bankers draft..............

Thank you and hope to hear from you soon.
Regards
Mr. Garald

the shipping line will send a delegate to see the CAR and they will arrange for the pickup in two to three days after inspection

Obviously didn't sell to this guy but hope this gives you all a heads up in case you receive the same...

:-)
