Anyone got any pointers to who makes kit (other than VAG) to
interrogate the ECU?

Since my post on BMW diagnostics I've been up into the wee small hours on
the Internet and I believe that 1996 was when OBDII became standard and

do a laptop kit for £148 which could, over the years, make quite a saving.
Unfortunately they couldn't guarrantee that it would work on my 1992 318i
even though they sell the 20 pin plug interface lead.
