My partner is insured on our car but her policy will not allow me to be added, i was wondering is it possible for me to take out a seperate policy for the same vehicle.

I believe it is possible to take out another policy on the vehicle. I was in the same situation with my vehicle. I had to add my wife on a separate policy for the insurance (http://www.campingworldinsurance.com/) on our rv.

No you can't do that - each car can only have 1 policy at a time - so you need to cancel and go to someone that can insure you on the basis you need.
My freind has a M3 and his wife is only 23 (lucky bas**ed) He insured with a company called plan a might be worth trying them - 0845 450 6077.
