Hi

I have a problem with my Toyota Avensis 1998 Petrol Manual, 125,000 miles

It has recently developed a problem that Toyota diagnosed as incorrect spark plugs, which they duly changed and failed to rectify the problem, although of course charging me to do so.

The problem i have is this;

If i accelerate, not hard, just sedately, then the car splutters, almost as if there is some sort of fuel or air (or mixture) problem. If your also doing, say 50mph in 5th gear and put your foot down, the car splutters terribly, but lift your foot off the accelerator slightly then it stops. I can cruise on the motorway all day long at 70mph with no spluttering, until it comes to accelerating.

I am thinking that maybe one of the fuel/air (mixture) sensors has gone faulty, but i don't know enough about it.

Toyota have said that it could be ne of the leads leading from the spark plugs, but it may not be and they could replace them at a cost of £80 each only to find that is not the cause.

If it could be a lead, could i buy one cheaper and swap it over until i have either gone through all the leds or the problem goes away. Also, how do i know which sensor may have gone as there seems to be loads.

I very much appreciate any help anybody can give as this is costing me a lot of money which i don't have.

Many thanks

A set of HT leads (which go from your distributor to your spark plugs) will cost around £25-30 from Halfords. £80 from Toyota is an absolute rip off!

You may also want to check the distributor cap and rotor arm for signs of wear, and also check that the spark plug gap is set correctly.

Hope this helps,

Mark
