Just finished changing the head gasket on my citreon........and no more smoke! Overheating now though! The car runs fine but temperature heads towards the red in no time and the fan can't cope. I have bled the cooling system using a header bottle, but as soon as I crank the engine, pressure builds in the radiator and blows from the expansion tank. I have come to the conclusion that this pressure was the cause of the head gasket blowing... but whats causeing the water problem? the heater worked intermediatley for a while before the smoking problem started. Could a blocked heater matrix or radiator cause this problem?

Have you checked that your thermostat is working correctly? It should open between 80 and 90 deg C. If it is stuck closed, this would cause an overheating problem.

I have removed the thermostat and blanked off the heater, but still have the problem. Cannot crank the engine without coolant blowing out the expansion tank. checked the water pump, but it seems fine. when run for a little while, theres no water at the top of the radiator.... just high pressure steam!
