have same problem, did you find any answers? I'm taking it to the garage on tuesday. An engineer friend of mine suggests it may be the engine management chip that's faulty. The lcd display on the radiocassette also goes spammy on mine.

I have the same problem with a 1.6 Zetec. have you noticed that the radio volume reduces just a little when the speedometer fails. This tends to sugest that it might be a reduction in battery voltage. I will eb investigating. Any more info from anyone would help. It's driving me crazy

Hi folks.
got the same problem of stalling with a 1.6 zetec focus.
My regular mechanic says "theres nothing wrong with it", so I took him for a drive and it behaved.
Sometimes it is a total bag of doo doo and stalls as soon as I start slowing down, I have sort of adapted to it and bump it back into running again. But it is bloody dangerous, almost hit a bollard on a roundabout ...... which could have been a kid running over the road.
No its not my driving. I am a Police trained driver (back when they were doing it properly), Army trained, HGV and motorcycle. I have driven everything from a £50 mini to a 100K Ferrari, this is the worst piece of doo doo I have driven.
I did some trawling on the net and found that they had a problem in the US with Focus's and the stalling problem. It is either down to a sensor problem or something to do with a fuel filter - from what they said. Ford will admit no liability for it though.
I went to the expense of dropping a new battery in a 60 amp or Mamp, don't understand electrics but the guy said it is almost double normal output. So the upshot is do not waste your money on a battery.
Any Ford people out there want to come clean and tell us the fix for this? It could be a nice little runaround.

Hi,Sounds like a bad electrical connection that effects more than one item so it may be on a common power supply that feeds these items or the common return on the earth side, are these items separately fused if so are the supply connections on the fuse box tight and corrosion free.

Hi
We had this problem with my focus. You need to get the vehicle speed sensor changed. I went to a ford dealer and bought the sensor (about £10) then took it to a garage who charged the same to fit it. Would of done it myself, but its located on the gearbox and has a retaining pin (which is a swine to get out).
Hope this helps

I like to thank this person. Your thread was invaluable. A new speed censor was bought and installed by my mechanic and now the fault has been fixed. Both Ford and my mechanic didn't think this would work, but it did. I spent lots of money trying to sort this problem out without success and like some of the others who have posted replies on this forum, my mechanic would always tell me that he couldn't detect a fault, but of course we knew there was one. I was experiencing the same problems as others, loss of speed (power surge) speedometer dropping to zero etc. The problem got worse and started to become dangerous so thank you very much PARC62!!!

Well I also have to thank you all for this post.
This problem has been on & off for a while now & recently gave me cause for concern.
So I went to ford & got the part for £ 26 got it put in & the car is behaving itself.
Thanks one & all.
I really have visions of paying a ship load of money for testing etc etc.

Well the speedo has stopped playing up but I get a slight power loss at 60 - 70 mph. Speedo stays constant but you can feel a slight loss in power !!!
Any ideas people ?
