american needs insurance!

I am an american now living in the uk. I have transported my japanese car into the UK to drive here. I still only have my american driving liscence and registration on the car. The reg process seems it will take a month to process. How do I get insurance in the meantime. I have called NUMEROUS companies and none will do it. Most say I must have has a uk liscence for at least 3 months, 1 year, 3 years etc etc... I need to drive the car asap

Any suggestions?
