View Full Version : The Mobile Phone Debate

A small band of posters here occasionally post their belligerent,
unrepetent, 'I'm-so-different!' posts, claiming to regularly use a mobile
phone, and that most important, they're able to concentrate on the road
whilst doing so. Well, naturally those same posters are the ones who try
to 'stand out', for reasons which it isn't my place to speculate upon, nor
to ask why they're also the ones who regularly announce, among much
circumstance, that they've 'plonked' someone. That one is for another day.
Anyway, with apologies to Sorby, I was coming back along the Seine
Expressway ten minutes or so ago, and a plod van which was behind me and
which I had just passed two minutes before, hit the 'blues 'n' twos', as
Bear in his 'name-dropping, look at me I've got a copper for a mate!' mode
likes to call them. As soon as I heard the siren, I put my left-hand
indicator on, pulled onto the solid white line, and let 'em past.
I then had the dubious pleasure of seeing some thick cunt in a blue Laguna,
sit resolutely in front of the plod van, whilst the latter alternated siren
on and off, sounded his convential horn, and (I suppose) flashed his
headlights to try to get this ****er's attention. To no avail. Guess why.
Yep, matey was having an animated conversation on his mobile phone. This
went on for at least 60 seconds, which is amazing, considering that
everyone else had pulled over.
Eventually, at the lights at the Air France HQ, the blue Laguna stopped,
plod pulled up and pointed to the kerb, sort of 'pull over, sunshine;
you're nicked'. As I stopped at the lights next to the van, the driver got
out, looked at me and said, 'Was he on the phone ?' As I sort of shrugged
and replied, 'What do _you_ think ?', I heard the driver of the Laguna
start his plaintive whining, 'No, m'sieur, I was deep in thought about
another matter ...'
Of course, empirical evidence proves nothing, but it's not the first time
I've seen some vapid mongol be totally oblivious to what's going on around
him, because he's using a mobile phone. I hope they throw the book at the
****er. No. I hope the ****er in question gets stroppy and 'resists'.
It'll be no loss to humanity.

<0----5----10> And todays Rantometer reads 8.5. A sterling start
^ but we wait for the Rucka vs Leather debate before
we can really evaluate the quality of this one.

Quite apart from anything else he's 100% wrong, as usual.
The term he was looking for was "on full disco".

why on earth didn't you just say
"Today I saw a car driver delay a police van that was on its way to an
emergency call. The reason was that he was talking away on his mobile
phone and was apparently oblivious to the police van. The chap got
nicked. Does this lend any weight to the argument that people using
mobile phones while driving are concentrating less on their driver than
they should?"
rather than go into yet another one of your irrational rants? Seems your
new year's resolution is to be worse than last year given some of your
recent posts.
You'll undoubtedly say "you don't care. Life is unfair. What's it to
with you" or some other variation of your standard themes but FFS get a
grip.

I vote for the "most original content" section of the UKRM stats to be
dropped for this very reason! It's for the greater good Cab, YKIMS.

Heh, do you mean Paul said something new? This can't be "most original
content", as it has been said umpteen times before. (No offence Paul.)

No. There is a solid white line separating the two lanes at that part of
road. When matey hit his sirens, I was overtaking another car, so was
therefore in 'lane 2'. I couldn't pull over to the nearside, as there was
a car there, so I moved off to my left, 'hugged' the white line, and let
him past on my nearside. Quite proper, expedient, and wholly in accordance
with traffic law.
