It's done by invitations only, YTC. I need to send you an invitation,
so I'll need a valid email address for this. Once you receive the
invite, you can choose whatever address you fancy. i.e. the above. If
it's not taken.

Sending the invite to "nospam@nospam.com" probably won't work. Drop me
an email...

Just to be clear.....this address already exists and *is* valid, hence the
comment re 'a spare'......

Oops. I'm French. What would I know. ;-)

I'm not sure that I can send an invite to an existing gmail account.
I'll give it a crack. Ah, it did work. You should receive some invites
of your own, soon enough.

All I did was send the invites to several Yahoo accounts, then those
Gmail accounts (once setup) got invites, and so on and so forth.

Also notice how, after a while, you get more invites to replace the ones
you've sent. Neat.

Waaaaay back in 2004, when Gmail was first mentioned, Google invited folk to
register if they wanted further news and/or a Gmail account. I said yes
please, since when the silence has been deafening. Will my life be
incomplete without an account? Strikes me, in paranoid fashion, that the
only real benefit to archiving your entire life there would be to make life
that much easier for the spooks.

They're jolly useful, as is (for backup purposes of files or emails you
don't want to lose) the Gmail "virtual drive" someone's come up with.

Am I the only person on planet earth who isn't in the *slightest* bit
bothered by that? I've done nowt wrong, and there's nothing on any of my
PCs that could land me in trouble ... if I was an international
terrorist, I sure as **** wouldn't keep that information on a PC.

heh. It's just a lovely, lovely album. I play it over and over and over,
especially when (as this week), the back's playing up and I'm codeine'd
to the eyeballs. It's everything I can't stand about jazz, and yet I
utterly adore it ... I think it's a case of the music being so perfect
that it really doesn't matter what sort of music you like, you'll like
that album. If you've any soul at all :)

One of these days I'll get orf my lazy arse and go find some more jazz
of a similar nature, but for the moment that, and an album by Down To
The Bone called "From Manhattan to Staten", remain my jazz listening
faves ... *great*

You've done plenty wrong - it's just a question of "in who's eyes is
it wrong". The "I've got nothing to fear" argument falls apart if you
consider anything but a very benign state.

To give an example - while not a supporter of CND in the 80s, I would
argue very strongly that they were exercising their rights to protest
and lobby. The spooks were all over them, with phone taps left right
and centre.

Not just CND. My mum has a few tales[1] to tell about Greenham Common
and the antics of the security services.

Er ... yeah ... except I've never been a member of CND, or any political
organisation ... I'm talking here purely about *me*. I truly can't think
of anything I've ever done that anyone in authority would be the
slightest bit interested in.

Anything even slightly dodgy gets done on the phone ... now if they're
going to start tapping every mobile in the UK then maybe, although
thinking about it I'm not sure even that would see me register on
anyone's "arrest this terrorist" scale.

I'm not saying governmental intrusion isn't wrong, I'm just struggling
to imagine what I've ever done that would cause the authorities to have
kittens.

<thinks>

Christ, I'm a model citizen. How depressing :(

It is not necessarily about you.

Way back when I lost my clearance apparently because I had a close
friend who happened to be a member of a revolutionary communist group.

You mean the Communist Party of Great Britain (marxist/leninist) Ltd[1],
whose base of operations was a thoroughly capitalist book shop in
Stanford le Hope? Hardly a threat to world order imho but there you go,
do I give a ****.

well, every mobile phone call is already digitized and processed by a

The reality was even funnier I promise you. It made Citizen Cane look
like a drama/documentary.

Yes. I'm pissed.

I also blame Auvache for spelling Kane with a C, the kunt.

Didn't you recently say you knowingly smuggled an unspecified amount of a
controlled drug through customs? The authorities tend to show an
interest in those type of antics.

Your comments that it's only *you* that you're concerned about are
slightly worrying; either that or you're being deliberately obtuse. Not
wanting to trot out Pastor Niemoller but the whole society thing isn't
just about you.

I take plenty of, quite legal, actions that result in interest from the
authorities.

lol. Some dope? Accidentally ... well, accidentally up until about 10
feet from the scanner :) I hardly think it's worth a riot squad for ...
but it's ok, I'll go quietly.

> Your comments that it's only *you* that you're concerned about are

If you look, I made exactly that statement, I.e. I was speaking purely
personally, not getting on my high horse on behalf of others. Having
said that, how do you make rules for this? I.e. I quite like the idea of
terrorists not succeeding in the UK, but I also quite like whatever few
civil liberties I have left. It's a bit of a poser.

> I take plenty of, quite legal, actions that result in interest from the

Jolly good. Carry on.

The original point was one of "don't put everything in one email account
as it'd be easier for those with black helicopters to suss out", and my
point was simply that a) people seem to me to get amazingly paranoid
about this sort of thing with very little good reason and that b) I was
slightly disappointed to discover I'm really of no interest whatsoever
to those with a hidden agenda.

Now, if you want to start talking about the powers themselves, and
what's hidden, then you're into a totally different debate, and I'd
leave that one to those who know more about it than I, except to say
that, in this technological age, I'm not entirely sure what any of us
could do to protect ourselves, given that, unlike (say) mail tapping, it
can be done with absolutely no sign whatsoever that anything has
happened. Encryption maybe?

Anyway, I'm just waiting for the goon squad to arrive ... Champ and I
exchanged SMSs yesterday sufficiently contentious that I expect they'll
be here any second. Herself has demanded that they wipe their feet once
they've kicked the door down or she'll be very annoyed with them.
