Spent the weekend up to me elbows in the stuff.
Top advice though guys, the Suzuki now looks like new, all the swingarm and
surround is a gleaming oil/ lube/ brake dust free area.
Get the wheels back on tuesday, and then I can bolt everything back together
again.
Cheers.

S'big enough for me ta. Why would I want a lairy litre bike anyhow, the
longest straight bit of road here is less than a mile.
Although, had I not just bought a house the 750K4 would be in my garage
right now.

Paraffin does have a lower flash point than petrol but that doesn't make it
"safe".

there's 4 in my garage at the moment (and 3 pedal cycles). I don't
think I've ever had 5 bikes at the same time.
Still, I find out what my bonus[1] is in about 4 weeks time, so you
never know.
[1] I know what my pay-rise will be, but they like to keep the bonuses
a secret.

Currently 5, one of which is Herself's 125, and garage at capacity. :-(

hopefully, enough to pay off my various debtors. I've really no idea
what level of bonuses they're paying this year. Though if it's
comparible to my pay rise, I'll be pretty ****ing happy. Thing is,
they've been banging on about how unexpectedly well the company did
last year - if they *don't* pay decent bonuses, I know loads of people
who'll leave.

it's all silly. Senior management know what we'll be getting, but they
won't tell until 2 weeks before the bonuses are actually paid. I also
know what pay rises my staff are getting, but I'm only authorized to
tell about 50% of them in advance[1]
[1] so I won't tell any of them in advance, as they're all mates, and
it'd only cause a fuss if I tell those I'm allowed to tell.

They do that at my place too, so I find out in March.
I'll bet it's fairly **** as the huge profit we made probably won't be
quite as high as the huge profit they set as a target... Just like last
year, and the year before. Neat trick.

I find out mid-Feb, what will be in my end-of-Feb pay packet.

oh sure, that's SOP. However, they've been harping on here for the last
3 months about how much extra money we made (by bringing in new
business) than was forecast at the start of last year. So if they don't
pay (performance related) bonuses[1], people are going to be seriously
pissed off.
[1] Pay rises are a different story of course, the #1 factor[2] here
concerning whether or not you get a pay rise is: how does your
compensation compare to the industry standard; if you're already paid
as much as you could get somewhere else, you'll get an inflation-linked
raise and that's your lot.
[2] fortunately, this /can/ be over-ridden by out-performance during
the previous year.

Don't get me wrong, I'll get some. I just don't expect it to be
anything special, our bonus percentages are set at division level, so
are very 'one (european) size fits all'.
Standard corporate stuff really.
It's not just about money though, interesting work is also important to
me, I get that in spades.

quite a large percentage of my annual salary is performance related,
paid as an annual bonus.
Actually, I suppose it depends on your definition of large, but
typically bonuses[1] here are 5-15% of the basic salary.
I'll be fairly deeply dischuffed if it's not a decent whack (though I'm
getting a 16% pay rise on my basic salary, so I can't complain /too/
much).

Assuming you're talking about the bottom line on a company balance
sheet, sure. Agree 100%.
With internal targets however there are a lot more variables, some
incredibly wooly. I'm sure you know how it is as well as anyone, Ben.

Very good. I can beat it with 17 bikes up to 250cc in a single garage
circa 1981/2. Some were suspended from the rafters. All belonged to me
and my mate. I had 7 lovely RD400s at one time, all in a single garage
for about 9 months.

I'm thinking of trying to move across myself, outsourcing is too cost
constrained to get those kind of perks. If we're lucky they send us to
Bangalore. :-/

Just spend lots of time chatting to the customers whenever you visit
them.. new work always drops out that way, if not at the time then at a
later date because "I remember Ben talking about such and such, let's
call him."..
Ker-ching.

Yeah, the always keep your ears open thing has already been drummed
into us.
It'll be tough for me though, as I'm on internal projects, that aren't
billable, till April. I asked if I could bill my hours to the company
:-)

We've currently got ZX9R, a Triumph 595, a Triumph 955, a 1200
Bandit and a CG125 with the 595 being the only visitor. I'm riding
none of them atm because it's too ****ing cold.

Nope. If it's cold enough to need thermals then it's too cold to be
thrashing a bike around.
