I suspect this requires a degree of caution.

Surely you didn't get yours with "no studying, no exams, no coursework?"

I did ... I just added it to my CV and nobody has ever questioned it.

I was thinking about awarding myself a PhD next year.

You should always master the situation first or a docter will be required.

No coursework for sure[1]; the viva was a half hour with two good
friends followed by 2-1/2 hours of discussion on what I might do next. I
suppose I did some study for the literature review, and to be able to
write the theory chapter on "the usual two-term expansion in spherical
harmonics of the charge distribution in an electron swarm drifting in a
gas under the influence of an electric field", or some-such. But most was
original research, or "life experience" as they put it now...

[1] Well, I did a course on Simula-67 but that wasn't necessary for the
PhD, tho' it came in handy to write a PDP/8-e dissassembler to document
some computer routines more easily.
