"...In a research report published by the Association of British Insurers (ABI) it’s revealed that: “In the last few years, the proportion of young drivers killed or seriously injured on our roads has increased, while the overall number of deaths and serious injuries has fallen.” The ABI have joined forces with Brake, RoadSafe, the Parliamentary Council for Transport Safety and the RAC Foundation. Together the organizations aim to make young motorists safer on the roads.

Young drivers are far more likely to be involved in a serious road accident than older motorists. 17 to 20 year old men are almost 5 times more likely to be in an accident which involves casualty than 30 to 59 year old men. In 2005 almost 1200 young drivers were killed or badly injured on British roads, that’s more than 3 each day. Almost 1 in 4 passengers who have suffered serious road accident injuries were the passenger of a young driver at the time..." ~ Overdrive (http://elle-overdrive.blogspot.com/)

Maybe that's why parents don't let their teens take the wheel.

Yeah. I wouldn't really believe them at first, especially when I got my first car. But now that I see these figures, I guess they are right.

How has lwb0436z got to 44 posts without being banned? Is there any moderation on this foum?

Back on topic- I totally agree with this, why do you younguns insist on driving like idiots? .....To be fair, however, i used to drive fast when i was 17-20 but you soon realise that keeping your head and limbs attatched to your body is far more important than driving quick and getting to your destination 10 mins earlier.

I think this is why insurance is expensive for young lads, as they're quite likely to end up in a ditch/tree.

While all new drivers make mistakes, teenagers often think they're invincible. I know I had a couple of near accidents in the first few weeks after getting my first car.

I hope that the parents make sure their kids take car this time of year though, with the weather starting to get worse. Dark, dam, icy roads can be treacherous for novice drivers.

Thats indeed true. Teenagers are at most risk due to their competetive nature. I was reading this interesting article on road safety, and how Brits seem to understand road safety, but on the majority, seem to ignore it. It then compared these statistics to other EU countries. No wonder parents disassaprove their teen the control of a car. This article can be read here: http://www.noclaimsdiscount.co.uk/news/art_display.php?show=200812221
