View Full Version : Cheers Eddie!
I was bemoaning the fact my laptop has something like 18 Gig free out of
a 60 gig drive (lots of stuff on it), so his Eddie-ness suggested I try
this:
http://www.jam-software.com/freeware/index.shtml#treesize
And by golly it works too ... just found over 3 gig in saved games files
that I don't need anymore.
Thought others might find it useful. Apologies if it's a ginge.

I thought it was worth a download but what are you supposed to do with
it once you've scanned your drive?

Well if you sort the sub-directories by size you can see what's taking
up space where; now obviously if *all* your stuff is needed then yes,
there's little point, but I immediately found about 3 gigs worth of
stuff I don't use anymore ... deleted it and hey presto, more disc
space.

Nice one. My 40Gb C drive was down to 7 Gb free, but there was 14Gb taken
up with assorted crap that I didn't need.
Cool.

I don't see the point of downloading a program to do what I can do
manually. I thought there'd be some sort of automation to it, like
"there is x amount of crap on C:, do you want to delete" sort of thing.

My Dad did that once ... brought his lap-top home from work for me to have a
look at because he'd been clearing up some disk space, found a big hidden
file he wasn't using and deleted it.
Naturally it was his Windows swap file, for Windows 3.1 I think (ISTR that
'95 onwards could rebuild your swap file on the fly).

3 *GIG* in save games? Are you saving every time you press the fire button
or something?
Seriously, how big is/was the biggest single save file, and what game was it
from?

I had a directory where I'd stuck half a dozen episodes of "West Wing" while
I was copying them to DVD and another that had quarter of a million XML
files in that I'd been using for work.

They were mostly from "Soldiers: Heroes of WWII" (a superb game if you
like that sort of thing, which I do).
Let's have a look ... each save game takes about 20-25 meg, and I had
hundreds of them ... each save game gets its own sub-directory and I
never bothered to delete them [1] Doh!
[1] there are 4 campaigns, each with 8 or so missions, and each mission
I could easily get up to 100 saves because, on the hardest level (there
are 4 levels of difficulty), when things go wrong, they go seriously
wrong seriously fast

BTW, under "Program Files" there's a directory called "install", with
loads of install files from various bits of software; can I delete those
files too or are they referenced to somewhere?
That would free up another 2 Gig.

The problem with doing it manually is you have to look at the
properties of every bloody subdirectory. A neat tool that gives you a
pie chart allows you to drill down to the bulky files very quickly.

Egads! What are they storing?
Honestly, I'm surprised just how bloated PC coding has become. The save game
file size for the game I'm working on[1] is 63K.
63K!
[1] Admittedly for the PS2 so it's got a physical limit of 8MB anyway.

No it's me being thick ... "Install" is a directory I created, where I
store all the installation files I've downloaded, so I can back them up

Right, ok. So what teatree or whatever it's called does, is give me an
explorer style view of my system and other files/folders and gives me
the size of each directory without having to check the properties of
each one?
I must be missing something because apart from seeing the size of the
folders, I can't see any real benefit apart from stumbling upon
something you remember uninstalling six months ago but didn't delete the
install folder. Am I the only one here who actually removes everything
when uninstalling stuff?
The other thing, how do I know if something is safe to delete? For
example:
I have 411MB in the service pack files directory. I'm never going to
uninstall service pack 2 so can I delete this directory and what about
the i386? Are there operational files in there or is that just where the
binaries were stored when service pack 2 installed itself? A bit of a
hint within the program about what could be deleted would be useful.
The first few lines go like this:
5,353 MB C:\
+<red bar> 3,180 WINDOWS
+<red bar> 1,136 MB Program Files
+<red bar> 1,057 MB Documents and Settings
+<white> 84,090 MB Drivers
<white> 58,432 MB ATI
<white> 22,833 MB My Shared Folder
<white> 291 kb [Files]
Does this mean there's 3,180 MB of junk in the WINDOWS folder or is it
telling me that's how much is in there? Can you see my point, it's no
good telling me what's in there if there's nothing I can do or know
about to get rid of it.
There's a few other entries but they show 0 kb.

In fairness, I don't think it was designed with Sun readers in mind.

Well if you'd said that to start with you could've saved me a lot of
effort.

Indeed, it rocks. PC Pro used to include it on their 'essentials' cover
disk, and with good reason.

Copy them onto a DVD first.

Why is that actually? And why are they charging so ****ing much for
the memory cards? It's not like memory is soo expensive in itself still,

Dunno, I'd assume it's proprietory technology but that's just a stab in the
dark.
To be fair though, you've got to be at least moderately hardcore to need
more than 8MB of save space on a PS2.
