Nissan Terrano

I appreciate the Terrano is perhaps not the most modern 4X4 but are there
any known reliability problems with is vehicle. I need a new towcar and
would like one that could last a few years without lots of worries. I have
thought about the Discovery but it is a bit pricey and I wanted to buy new
not second-hand. I have also heard that the LR is not the most reliable but
does this only apply to older vehicles.

I have just traded in my Terrano for a Freelander. My reasons for doing this
are many and varied, but the main reason was that the Terrano was costing me
a fortune in fuel. It was the 2.7tdi engine buit it was being used around
town alot by the wife so it was only returing about 23 - 24 to the gallon.
The Freelander is giving us about 35 - 40. I know it's not going to be as
good a towcar for the van as the Terry was but for 12K miles a year, only
about 500 of those are ACTUALLY towing miles so I just couldn't justify the
running costs anymore.
I have quite a few other reasons but I shan't prattle on!

Perhaps I should have mentioned that I would only consider diesel. Have
often thought about the Kia range both Sedona and Sorrento but have yet to
be convinced of long term lasting qualities. Perhaps being unrealistic but
the idea is the buy a car that could last 10 years. Reason, I am soon to
take early retirement so wish to invest wisely if buying any new car is an
investment!!!!

Thanks for reply. I appreciate what you have said before about the Terano. I
would hope the new 3lt engine might be a little more economical than the
2.7lt but there would not be a lot in it. I tow on average about 3000 miles
a year, sometimes more. My total milage is often only around 8000. I had
been looking at an X-Trail but have been a little put off by some comments
on a website. Likewise I would have considered the Freelander if it had a

well buy a Mondeo estate which I can get a good discount off.

I've also got the LWB Mav and cant fault it, plenty of power at a
reasonable cost.. So long as you keep it around or less than 50 it aint
bad on fuel.

If the website you are referring to is myxtrail.com, I believe these people
are a very loud minority who undoubtedly have had some bad luck with the
X-Trail. With the most reliable of vehicles you are bound to get a few bad
ones and in this case these people are making the most noise.

The number of people who find the X-Trail exceptionally reliable,
comfortable, economical, etc., etc. is illustrated in the current Auto
Express Special Issue which contains the Driver Power 2004 survey giving the
top 100 cars, which were voted for by over 37,000 owners - not motoring
writers. This survey is based on Performance, Ride Quality, Handling,
Braking, Practicality, Comfort, Ease of Driving, Build Quality, Reliability
and Running Costs.

Out of ALL CARS in ALL CLASSES the X-Trail came (FIFTH) - 5th out 100!! -
beaten only by Lexus IS200, Honda S2000, Mazda 6 and top car, Honda Jazz.
Some result I think you'll agree.

The X-Trail was also voted BEST OFF ROADER.

To put it into context the:
Honda CRV was number 14 out of 100
Toyota RAV4 was number 17 out of 100
LR Discovery was number 73 out of 100
LR Freelander was number 91 out of 100

Loud minority or not, from the information provided on that web site I
question whether Nissan dealt with the situation adequately enough.
I'm not saying they didn't - I've only heard one side of the story and
that isn't enough to be convincing.

It has however given me extra reason to save the pennies to get the
latest model ;)

impressed with the X-Trail when I had a look at one although I have not yet
had a test drive. In many ways it would be the perfect tow vehicle for me,
right weight, right towing capacity and economy. What I really have to
decide now is will it be a better tow car than a Mondeo with the 130hp
diesel engine. Perhaps not the right question for a 4x4 group even the
Mondeo v X-Trail there is still several thousand pounds difference because
of the Ford employee scheme. Its just a pity Ford don't do a diesel
Maverick.

I can't really comment on whether the Mondeo will be a better tow car or not
because I have never driven one. I went from a Passat Estate with the VR6
engine which was an absolute dream of a tow car and one I kept for 5 years.
However, I changed to 4x4s because I prefer the style of vehicle - i.e.
higher ride, greater feeling of security, 4 wheel drive etc. That is
probably what you need to decide before you go for the actual make.

Since you do tow a lot, you should be aware that the Terrano is a part
time four wheel drive. In other words, it is not meant to be used with
four wheels driving on a paved road. In this respect you will find
other models superior. In other respects the Terrano is rather good.
The highest quality vehicle in this sector is made by Toyota. Even
Mercedes and BMW do not come close to Toyota build quality and long
term reliability.

Nissan UK have finally just issued a recall notice on all Xtrail diesels manufactured until they changed from SE+ to SVE variants. The reason being because the Cam Chain problem can cause a failure in the EBS system so it now a safety issue.

The facts are that thousands of these vehicles were sold and Nissan knew of the problems. Most owners will not be aware of the damage to their engines until the warranty has expired. MyXtrail.com exists to inform.

The Xtrail is still a great vehicle and the 2004 model has fixed all the issues we have suffered from.

I can vouch forthe Xtrail being able to tow well, I have a Bailey Wyoming twin axle and have towed it up a 1:5 hill near Kimmeridge in Dorset. A great vehicle but one that has issues in the early versions.

just ordered a terrano 2.7tdi se and i think for £15600 on the road with a years tax you'll struggle to get a better deal than that!

We are thinking of purchasing a petrol sport 02 X Trail is there a known problem with the engine in this model please ? as with the diesel .....
