I have a 1982 Polar 470 which needs a couple of shock absorbers for the
suspension (torsion bar system). The chassis is made by Josef Peitz which
appears to be a German company and the date stamp of the axle is 1979. The
problem is trying to find a couple of shock absorbers that will fit. They
look similar to Volvo 140 series rear dampers but they could also be
Mercedes in origin as it uses Mercedes wheels. Trouble is trying to find
some to compare or measure.
The unit has eye fixings at both ends and mount on 12mm diameter bolts. The
distance eye centre to eye centre is about 310mm and the eye mountings are
about 45mm width. The max chassis weight is 1100kg single axle (1200kg on
the axle plate).
I've emailed Polarvagnen in Sweden but haven't heard anything yet. I've had
a look at Alko octagon dampers but i don't think they will fit properly. If
anyone can help or shed some light on suitable similar dampers (lots of the
older vans had dampers fitted in various mounting configs) but can't find
anywhere locally (eastern Lincolnshire) who have any to compare to.
If anyone has any ideas please let me know through the ng (was hoping to go
out soon but will have to wait)
TIA
Ian
