Hi everyone,

Bit of a dilemma here. A Polish work colleague of mine has just bought a Jersey registered used Ford Fiesta from Bristol. The seller (who sells cars from his home, so whether you'd call it a private sale or not i don't know), assured me and him that we'd have to pay about £15-£20 in VAT. Being none the wiser, I accepted this and he bought the car for a reasonable price (£400). Today I phoned Customs and Revenue to find out that you have to pay an eyewatering 17.5% VAT on the value of the car, but is this correct?
The car has already been imported into the U.K. as it was bought in Bristol. Is Jersey part of the EU?
Any ideas anyone?
