I have recently advertised a car at a very good price and I knew it would sell quickly. I have now had a call fom a mobile from someone who has confirmed that he will buy the car based upon photographs and description. He has requested my bank details so that he can pay £500 cash into my account as a deposit. A week later he will then visit and pay the remaining £6000 in cash. He will collect during banking hours so that we can both go to the bank and pay the cash in before handing over the keys.

Is there any danger in me providing him my bank details to pay the initial deposit (account number and sort code)? and am I missing anything obvious here or being too cautious ? This information is readily available on cheques / statements etc but I'm not sure.

Thanks for your help.

Having just lost 13k, I suggest you meet the person, in person.

I agree to being cautious - giving your bank details should not be an issue as they cannot get access to your funds. What sort of car is it, is it a rare car or a everyday type? I personally would not pay £500 into some strangers account without seeing the item.

Can you wait until next week? I would then do it in one shot

Well the procedure seems stright forward. He also want to meet you and give you the cash ( that is normal procedure ). However, ask him to meet at your bank. Then you will be able to check if he money is not fake
