View Full Version : Which manufacturers to avoid for <10yr old vans

Further to my earlier post about a damp Trophy van on Ebay ( which ended up
feich over £1200 ),
I'd like to be advised over which manufacturers to avoid due to
corrosion/damp/ general bad construction.
I've learnt through post browsing is that German vans are plainer but much
better built than UK vans.
I have a max towing limit of 1300 kilos on my car although the vehicle
weight is ~1750kilos. I need a min 5berth van but I doubt I can opt for a
twin axle van due to the towing limit. Are there some makes of older vans
which are well equiped but are reasonably lightweight ? eg do Lunar vans
meet this criteria or are they the kind that suffer from damp???

From personal experience one van you could look for is the Coachman
Mirage (also a special edition of the same badged Oasis) 500/5. This is
a 16.5 ft. 5 berth which has a MTPLP of 1125 Kg. The eight year old
model I have just traded was dry as a bone.
A friend has a Lunar which is only one year old and has significant damp
problems. The major areas seem to be where the front and rear panels
meet the roof line.

We use a 1994 Abbey County Dorset (two-berth) which is absolutely dry. 6.2m
shipping length. MGW (or whatever it's called these days) is 1100kg.
Still looks relatively up-to-date

We had a Lunar Delta which went rotten through damp at about 5 years old.

I had major problems with a 1998 Swift that was found to be damp within
twelve months. That was supposedly fixed then further damp appeared just six
months later. I also had friends who experienced similar problems although
not quite as severe as mine. And all through the problems, Swift were
hopeless, not answering letters, returning phone calls etc and not helping
the dealer either.

My previous van was a Lunar, a wet sponge would have been dryer.
I replaced about two thirds of the internal walls then the front
nearly fell of due to damp & rot.
They don't call them 'Leaky Lunars' in the trade without reason.
