Vw golf 1.4 1999 engine tapping noise

Please help
My Golf has a tapping noise which sounds like it comes from the bottom of the engine. I have taken it to a garage but the guy wasnt helpfull and said it happens to most golf mk4s 1.4. Its really annoying and i plan to sell the car soon and would like the car to sound as good as it looks.
Has anyone outhere had a similar problem or does someone know what it is.

Any help would be appreciated.

Ps. the only other suggestion ive had is that the cylinder valves may need replacing!

My girlfriend had a similar problem with her 1999 1.4 golf. Loud tapping sound coming from the engine. It almost sounded like it was coming from the cam belt but the car only done about 30k so I thought it was something else. Turns out it was the cam belt and it’s a common problem on 1.4’s.

Thanks for feedback, unfortunatley the cambelts been changed and rollers etc. and it hasnt made a difference.

Anyone else who has had a similar problem and had it fixed please let me know.

replacing? johnson if there the hydraulic kind then there self adjusting
however if you have the manual kind of valves then you can and probably
need them to be adjusted when there out of adjustment they start to lightly
hit the pistons.

They are hydraulic so i guess it nust be something else!
