Can some one please help me.

Im tight on cash and cant afford big garage bills.

I have a prob with my L reg (93) ford escort 1.6 16v

when i put my foot down on the accelerator sometimes it will go sometimes it will half go and sometimes it will just rev but not actually accelerate most times all this in one gear.

i have just changed the fuel filter because i and my friends all beleived it to be the problem. but its not.

it feels like it might be the clutch, ive been told its not but it feels like somethings is only just gripping when its only giving half then looses it altogether. yet sometimes its ok. its really dangerous for when i need to overtake. and i often need much higher revs than normal to pull away from standing still. its is rubbish in really low revs like taking a slow corner in 2nd gear, most cars a small rumble but my escort jolts back and forth.

any help or advice on work or tests i can carry out meself or is it time for a big garage bill???

any advice muchos appreciatos

thanks guys

I would recommend that you check all the air pipes are not clogged up etc.

If these pipes are empty then i would recommend that you check the air filter sensor that plugs into your air box.

You also metioned that the car is not picking up speed and you thought it might be the clutch. If it is the clutch you will know because, when you accelerate in gear it will rev up loads and the car will not move and will continue to rev.
Good way to test your cluch is to put the handbreak on, find your bite on the clutch, rev the engine a bit then engaged the cluch if the car wants to pull forward then it is fine, but if it is reving and you cannot feel the car move then your clutch is on it's way out.

If you need any help i will try, just mail me @ chrisarchbolds@supanet.com
