Chatting to a guy in a local bodyshop, who was spraying a modern car
with no mask or extractor ! I asked him if it was cellulose knowing that
2 pack would have probably killed him !

He said it was not cellulose but ' base coat ' and would be followed
by lacquer. He never uses 2 pack.

An excellent finish seemed to be acheived with minimal effort. Any
base coat overspray seemed to be melted into the surrounding area
when the laquer was applied.

Any more info. on this would be appreciated as I thought cellulose
was still the only safe diy / home option.

Could be acrylic, but "base-coat" as a name doesn't preclude it being
cellulose either. He sounds like he's a great paint sprayer but a bit
confused with the terminology. It's called base-coat because that's what it
is - the paint under the laquer finish.

Laquer: if this applied to a freshly painted base-coat the solvent carrier
can "re-wet" the base coat thereby letting the edges feather even more.

My mate has run his own bodyshop / restoration business for twenty years or
more, and I don't think he even possesses a mask or extractor. I am always
amazed at how he seems to be unaffected - I go outside when he sprays a
small panel, I hate to think what a full respray would kick out. I know he
uses mainly cellulose but I think he does some 2-pack stuff too. He probably
wouldn't recommend it to anyone else but I suppose his health is his own
concern.
