Hi, I currently work at www.thestudentmotorquotecompany.co.uk, so feel that I might be able to help. When trying to find insurance, the first thing to ask is will you be using the car the most, or will the car be registered in your own name. If you say yes to either of these, then you should put the policy in your name, making your parents no claims bonus irrelevant. If the policy is not in your name and an accident occurs, and you are proved to be the main driver, an insurer may not pay out. This is called ‘fronting’.

If you will not be the main driver, and the car is not owned or registered by you, then you could quote to be an additional driver on your parent’s policy. On the BMW this still could be a high premium as it is a big car, and insurers will penalise you because of your age. The Corsa would probably be a better option, although your mum will probably still see a price increase.

In either situation the best way would be to shop around at insurers that are able to quote younger drivers.
