View Full Version : Top Gear 'car darts' game... Brown one.

Okay. I give up, I've seen it three times, and my girlfriend and I are still
arguing about it.
Top Gear played darts with some cars. Most of them were clearly marked, the
names were mentioned. They also had a brown convertible. The badges were
removed, and it wasn't shown for very long on screen.
My initial reaction was that it was a mid 90s Saab 900 Convertible, but the
back end is completely wrong and looks identical from every angle I've seen
it from to a FWD Celica convertible.
So I'm stumped. Which doesn't happen to me very often.
My girlfriend says Saab. I say the windscreen frame and back end don't
support that.
Does anyone know? Or have still frames from it, or something? It's driving
me mad ;)

Not sure exactly, but I know it wasn't a saab and they certainly didn't do a
brown one...
maybe it was a TR7...

The car was a faded metallic brown, so it could have been another colour and
quickly repainted. Some effort had been made to hide whatever it was...

Not pointy enough, and too large...

Yes they did, I know someone who has (a metallic brown) one sitting in his
drive.

You didn't see the programme. obviously, did you !....
I would have said Saab, even the back end didn't look wrong, considering it
was a convertible.

It was a toyota celica cabrio mocked up for an advert some while ago, a
dealer turns into a cowboy and the car goes up and down on a pole.

Oh! What advert? If this is true then a: my car spotting skills are bang on,
and b: my girlfriend is /wrong/ :D
You know, I've checked pictures, and I am /so/ right. The rear 3/4 view is
unmistakeable.

To go into detail, when I saw the episode the first time round I instantly
recognised the car as what I described.
The car was used in the advert, a woman walks into a car dealership,
everything is fine, until the dealer puts on a stetson, climbs into a
disguised Celica Cabrio, the car then goes up on a single poster ramp and
bucks up and down like a bucking bronco while the dealer yells yahoo!
The woman makes her escape and exits through saloon type doors. The ad ends
with i think the AA recommending a pre purchase check.
Then we return to the car the on Top Gear, the same or apparently the same
car, a mildly disquised Celica, painted a foul browny color, with engine
removed.

Well any car engine made by Yamaha is worth hanging on to. The FWD
part is junk. Sadly my RWD '84 2.0XT had a Toyota lump in it, it was
good in the 80's but it would have been so much better with a Yamaha
in it.

Agreed. The Saab 900 convertible (classic version) was based on the Saab
900 Saloon, not the 900 hatch (obviously) so it does look a little odd.
For the record, I'm sure it was a 900 too, I commented to the missus
about it.

At the risk of being obvious, why not contact Top Gear and ask them?

No need - it's definitely a Celica. I've compared as many pictures as I can
find online, and it's clear that the Top Gear car had painted on headlights
;)
