UK CARS SCAM. BE AWARE!!!
Please read carefully if you don’t want to become a victim like me and my sister and some of my friends. I am sending this message from my behalf and from behalf of all the people I know who have been ripped off. I am sending this message to a lot of friends and ask them to forward it to others to help as many people as I can.
WANT TO SELL YOUR CAR?
LIST OF SOME UK SITES BELOW WHERE NOT TO GO:
Motor Network – £89.99 - http://www.motornetwork.co.uk – A COMPLETE RIP OFF.
They are looking for car adverts from other websites and start calling the sellers telling them that they have few buyers wanted to buy a car like yours, but you have to register with them first. It is “only” £89.99 one off fee. And that’s it; once they take your money forget it. Be aware, don’t let them take over they may ring you over 5 times today, and pushing you to register with them. They can tell you for example: “We have three buyers who want to buy your car right now.” Well you tell me how, when the buyers haven’t even seen your car? PLEASE AVOID!!!
Desperate Seller - £29.99 - http://www.desperateseller.com or co.uk
For this money they are going to put your advert in 101 top car websites until sold. – WHAT A LIE. They have a list of this websites, some of them don’t even work and almost all of them (if you’re looking carefully) use the same search technology and the same database. Imagine YOU have a website and then create another 100 small websites and start telling the people that you can put their advert in your “PARTNERS’ WEBSITES” which websites buy the way are all yours. PLEASE AVOID!!!
Auto Seek - £15 - http://www.autoseek.co.uk – a Car Data sister site.
Car Data - from “just” £79.99 - http://www.cardata.co.uk – PROBABLY THE FOUNDER OF THIS SCAM. THE WEBSITES ABOVE ARE PROBABLY SOME OF THE MANY CAR DATA GAMES.
@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@
LIST OF SOME HIGLY RECOMMENDED UK SITES FOR BUYING OR SELLING CARS:
AUTOTRADER – from £5.99 to £45 for two weeks - http://www.autotrader.co.uk
WEBMOTORS UK – free and paid option £15 until sold - http://www.webmotors.co.uk
EXCHANGE AND MART – from £5 to £15 for two weeks - http://www.exchangeandmart.co.uk
FRIDAY AD – from £10 to £45 - http://www.friday-ad.co.uk
THE SITES ABOVE ARE RECOMMENDED BECAUSE I AND A LOT OF PEOPLE I KNOW HAVE SOLD THEIR CARS THROUGH THEM.
@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@
Please, if you are looking to buy or sell a car from the internet, be very careful which sites you’re visiting and what kind of emails/offers you’re receiving.
If you are a seller, you might receive an email message similar to this below:
………………………………………………………………….
Sellers lookout for these signs!
* Overpayment scams - the person says they want to buy your item without seeing it! They will say they have someone owing them money who will send you a cheque. This will be for far more than the item is worth, the idea being that you take the cost of the item and send the rest to their shipping agent. They will ask you to send via Western Union or Moneygram, NEVER SEND MONEY USING WESTERN UNION or MONEYGRAM for the overpayment of goods. Truth is that this will be a fake/counterfeit, stolen or an altered cheque (check). This will bounce eventually, often after you have sent the money to them. You will then owe the bank ££££'s - the scammer will have disappeared, abandoned the free email account he used to communicate to you.
Think about it would anyone really trust a total stranger with more money than something is worth?
* Clues to detect a scammer
o Poor use of English, strange combinations of long words, god, bless ...
o Strong emphasis on the payment method
o Asking for information you have already given in the advert
o May talk about representing a client, shipping agent ..
o Have a sense of urgency to need your item - do they not sell it in their country?
Buyers lookout for these signs!
Lookout for items that are priced less than the market price! These tend to be cars that are being advertised for an amazing price. The price will be so good that you feel you need to get in touch. The advertiser will say the car is in another country to where you are, but that he has a good courier that will get the item to you in a few days. He will then ask for a deposit via Western Union or Moneygram, NEVER SEND MONEY USING WESTERN UNION or MONEYGRAM. Never send money for a deposit for something you have not seen, especially to someone overseas.
Fraud Alert
Do not accept cheques for your goods, from distant buyers, that are of a higher value than the item you are selling. The fraudsters post you a counterfeit cheques and you wire them your good money. Their cheque may well clear, but you will lose the funds once the bank realise the cheque is fraudulent. Example: you sell car for £5,000. They post you fake £7,000 cheque and you send them £2,000. Don't fall for it!
Example of dodgy email:
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Thanks for your mail, due to what i have told you concerning the payment and the shippment that you my shipper will come for the pick up of the BRAND NEW HP iPAQ pda H2210 as soon as the cheque clear. My client that is owning some funds in United Kingdom (£3,500), i will instruct him to issue the cheque for you and as soon as it clear you will deduct the cost of the BRAND NEW HP iPAQ pda H2210 (£389) the remaining balance will be send to my shipper via Western Union Money Transfer for immediately shipping arrangment. Do get back to me if these is okay by you, so that i can forward your information to my client ASAP.. Hope to hear from you soon

I too got ripped off by both AutoBuyer and CarData UK.
Unfortunately this was last year before reading these threads.
Got phoned by both after they had seen my addvertised car posted in the Loot paper.
Thought the extra advertising should help selling the vehicle and thought that as the £79.99 is reimbursed upon sale of the vehicle is was a good option. BAD MISTAKE!
I only sold my car 7 months later by advertising it on eBay. Unfortunately I didn't have the time to keep perusing advertising with papers.
During that 7 months neither AutoBuyer or CarData were able to refer a genuine buyer in my direction.
Seems they are very eager to take your money for the advertising but can't be bothered to get off their backside to do anything further. You need to be on their back to get you add refreshed each month or it is automatically taken off without warning. I tried to get a refund after the first month with not a single offer on the car but with no success.
All you get for your £79.99 is your pic and description posted on their web site. An expensive way to display your car.
Their site only attracted a couple of scammers who were people offering to buy your vehicle for either the price advertised or even a little more, for a buyer whom they represent. Wanting to pay via cheque upon collection. Bet the cheque would be made of rubber!!!
I also had someone from CarData on a later phone call state that AutoBuyer was started by a group of guys who used to work originally for CarData but had gone off and started up their own company caller AutoBuyer. He warned me that I would be unlikely that they would sell my vehicle. Unfortunately CarData were no better themselves.
If AutoBuyer or CarData phone you to advertise you vehicle for you I would suggest you put your Credit Card back in your wallet and save it for some cheaper more reliable advertising.
Very dissatisfied customer of AutoBuyer and CarData UK.

I also got ripped of by AutoBuyer... Now I only sell privately, as at least what I make is mine!
Incidentally, I reported them to What Car magazine who said they were planning to do some kind of report on companies like that. Lets hope they do a name and shame...:D

I was approached by this company, saying they had 3 buyers waiting to view my car. I paid 89.99 as they couldnt view it unless i was registered. I heard nothing from the company or the buyers. I have spent months ringing them to be told they will call me back and sont or that the person i need to speak to is on the phone.
I have written two letters of complaint, both with the same standard response which didnt address my complaint.
I am stil yet to recieve a refund, they take your money then dont contact you again and promise buyers waiting and full asking price. Dont Give Them Any Money, if anyone has any ideas how to get my money back, this would be greatfully recieve.
I have also been contact by Buyers Direct and a few others all promising the same thing. They get quite annoyed if you say no to them, and claim they are different to the other companies. I havent given them any money so i cant comment, but they sound like the same service.
Motor Network have completely dissapointed me, I can not believe they are allowed to trade in this manor - Is there anything we can do to stop this sort of thing happening????

Kathy, I had a similar experience only today. Motor Network contacted me promising a definite sale for my car if I registered with them for €89.99.
Of course, no prospective buyer contacted me and I was charged in Pounds Sterling. I sent e-mails demanding my money back. I am sure that Jonathan Matthews is laughing all the way to the bank. I doubt that this is the real name of the smooth-talker who conned me. Eventually, I will track down this disreputable outfit. I am determined to gain re-imbursement. I urge everyone who was tricked by this Gang of Hoodlums to alert all and sundry about their dishonourable modus operandi. I intend to drop into their office on Station Rd. (East London) if this place exists at all. Apart from the immorality of their swindling ways, what they are doing must be illegal. Motor Network
offers and charges for a service which it does not deliver. Why should anyone be compelled to pay for a service which is not delivered. I am quite sure that Motor Network can be challenged legally and prevented from operating in the future. Naturally, the tricksters will simply to carry on the racket under a different Trade Name. Anyway, I am determined to get my money back.

Read with interest. We were caught by these con artists in exactly the same way, yes they had buyers waiting for this make of car - we were selling it too cheap, - get all your money back when we sell - they make their money on finance deals. But we were conned out of an extra hard earned tenner. When we asked what this was for they told us it was for the photo. We hadnt asked for one, we were told they would listen to the recorded phone call and get back. They did, and said that near the end of the conversation we were asked if we wanted a photo, true we were. We asked the price and BINGO according to Auto robber we had entered into a contract. Its time these scum were put away for a long time or better still die a slow and horrible death.

Hi Sharon
I used the DesperateSeller website and it worked fine for me. I sold my car within 4 days and my advert appeared on all the websites that they said it would. I did find that many of the sites were powered by DesperateSeller but what does that matter as long as they bring buyers to your car?
There's also some very well established car websites in their package such as Autotrader, Whatcar, Wisebuyers, Friday-Ad, AutoExpres, Fish4 and many more. These are household names and DesperateSeller does not power their carsearch facilities thus your argument is very much invalid.
I say hats of to them. At least they do what they say and for just £29.99 who can argue? it is unfair to place DesaperateSeller in amongst the other poor websites you have mentioned.
Keep up the good work DS!

I too fell for the Motor Network spiel about 3 buyers lined up for my car, handed over £89 and never got a call.
I'm amazed that they can operate this fraud without challange. I have contacted Trading Standards and also the BBC consumer programme 'Watch Dog', if everyone effected by these scam companies does the same, then we might get some action.
Good luck

My advice is to buy cars privately in person. At the end of the day, it's all about getting from A to B. If you're rich, then just buy a car from new! At least if you look in your local mercury (Leicester Mercury for me), you can have close expection of a car or get people to sign things like "bought upon seen". At least in person, you'll be able to tell if it's a scam.
I suppose I'm lucky in that restrospect, I've got a couple of mechanics in the family e.g. my old man.

I also got scamed by these guys and I dont know about you but I really hate getting ripped off. I sent a letter to Watch Dog but didnt get a responce so I contacted trading standards and sent the following letter to Motor Network:
To whom it may concern,
Ref Number: MNXXXX
This letter is in reference to my earlier request for a refund of £89.99 made on 18 June 2007
I have not received a satisfactory response to my request for a refund on the grounds of misrepresentation.
I entered into an agreement with Motor Network after an unsolicited call from sales representative promising that 3 buyers wanted to view my car and after paying the £89.99 registration fee the buyers would contact me the very next day to arrange a viewing. This was a deliberate misrepresentation. Please also note that throughout our correspondence the representative failed to inform me of any terms and conditions that may of contradicted his promise to me.
Under the Misrepresentation act 1967, the effect of an actionable misrepresentation is to make the contract voidable, giving the innocent party the right to rescind the contract and/or claim damages.
As a result, I intend to claim the full amount charged plus court fees through the county court.
I look forward to a full response to this letter within 10 working days, otherwise I will commence court proceedings.
Yours faithfully,
I dont care thats its only 90 Quid its the principle. They need to know that they cant just get away with keep ripping people off. I fully intend to take them to court if I dont get a full refund. Anybody who want to let me know there details to give further evidence that this is NOT a once off case is more than welcome.
Cheers,

Hi All
I didnt realise so may of you replied, but thank you for taking the time to do so.
I did get my money back eventually but it was a struggle and got fobbed off many times before getting a result. I had to also be a little sneaky too! If you want to find out, please email at kathypink@hotmail.co.uk
I have had emails from people who saw what we have written and avoided the same fate. Which i am pleased to of been able to help, at least.
I also contact auto-trader, E&M and watch dog. Auto-trader and E&M were aware of it but couldnt stop them. I didnt get a reply from watch dog!
I agree with the person who said it was that 90.00 it was the principle and that the company shouldnt be able to trade the way they do.
I hope no one else falls for their scam. And if anyone does hear from WD or trading standards or anyone that wants to help us in the public, please send them in my direction!

Hi Kathy,
Thanks for the reply, I also got my money back. I started court proceedings and I got a call from the MD of Motor Network after he recived the summons. He agreed to a full refund plus half the court fees (£15). He also said if I was selling a car in the future he would advertise it for free (maybee il stick to auto trader though)
Thanks for your Help

Hi Fayrouz,
Thank you for your email and intrest in my car. I tried calling you and there was only a long beep, if you would like to call me on this number 0*8*1*4*47* then i will be able to give you full details. what i missed out in the advert is that it also has full service history. and for the asking price i really am stretching it i bought this car last year for 9,000 and ive spent thousands on this car, 8,000 is really my last price. Im sorry if that makes it just out of your reach i know how it feels but i need the money very much. Please before i give any details could you call me so we could arrange a meeting. it would be very odd if you try and buy the car without viewing it, there is nothing wrong with the car but i prefer you came down to see the car. Also you asked if i was first owner. i am not, a lady owned the car first.
call me anytime as soon as possble becuase i have another gentleman viewing my car tomorrow.
thank you

I'm a native of ontario in canada but presently in Guernsey in channel islands .
My self and my husband will take care of he shippment we had already consult a private shipping company who's going to handle it professionally for us both the shipping cost and other necessary activities concerning the shipment of the CAR.
Because the car will be finally ship to canada.Apart from the car being shipped at your location there is other consignments he need to ship for me some state in uk but have made it clear to him your location will be his first arrival before moving to any other destination .
However,as for the payment am paying you a united kingdom bankers draft(GBP) issue by uk bank base which am going to instruct my business associate to send you a bankers draft via post mail. The bankers draft is going to clear in any bank in united kingdom my bank advised and it will take maximum of 3 to 4 working days to FULLY CLEARED INTO YOUR BANK ACCOUNT, and once you've confirm the payment clearance and the money is finally available in your bank account the car should be hand over to the shippingagent and papers document as well once they arrive your location.
Thanks soo much and i really appreciate your efforts for taking your time to response to my enquiry.Hopefully to hear back from you today in order to proceed further with the payment and shipping arrangements as soon as possible. I look forward to hear back from you today.

Oh Snap!!! Now that bad men... thats deep ****...

I sold my volvo (http://volvo.my-place.us) 5 months later by advertising it on eBay.com. Unfortunately I didn't have the time to keep perusing advertising with papers.
During that 5 months neither AutoBuyer or CarData were able to refer a genuine buyer in my direction.

Thanks for posting all of these up, guys. I would not have been aware of these sites if I haven't read this post. I agree that if you want to buy or sell a car, it is much better to be done personally rather than go through a middle man.

I'm quite glad I've jumped on the net and googled CarData :) I am currently selling a car on Autotrader and received an unsolicited phone call from a 'Jamie' calling from Honda World, giving me the spiel about them having buyers lined up for my car etc.
I didn't really know anything about the car scams going on today and thought nothing of it. I got another call today from a different guy (same company I think) who was very pushy and wanted me to give him my details and £99.50 registration fee.
I asked for a website address to which he gave me www.cardata.co.uk (his first mistake) and then agreed to call me back later on today (second mistake).
Unfortunately for him I'm not in any mood to be scammed so I think i will keep him on the phone for a 'little' while and dangle the proverbial carrot in front of him (for a bit of fun :D)
Saying that, he will have probably realised that i'll be trawling the nets for car seller scams and might knock it on the head. Will see what happens :)

I'm the latest cardatauk sucker....I realised after Saturdays expose on R4's You & Yours....if I'd only googled "cardatauk scam"
So how do we get our money back? Y&Y said because it's less than £99 we can't go to our credit card company. But they took me for £99 plus £10.48 (for photos!)....are there any lawyers out there willing to act for all of us who were ripped off?

I had my RX-8 advertised on Autotrader at £7995 for a month with no luck at all. Then I put it on ebay as a classified advert which I think lasted for about a month too with nothing but stupid questions and a couple of offers for 5000!!! - its on an (05) plate with 23k miles!!!!
Someone suggested ebay auction so we did that and put a reserve of £7250 and it made £6300!!! - About a week later a company called motormarket said they had a guaranteed buyer for my car and if I paid £75 they would release the details and id have it sold immediately!!! -
Stupid me went for it and two weeks later and £75 shorter heard nothing, wouldnt return calls and bank wouldnt refund as I had given authorisation!
Finally someone at work had sold their TT through a site called dealerbid.co.uk so I went on there and sold it for £7300 to a dealer who collected it within a couple of days! - Wish I had known about it before but one thing is for sure I wont be falling for things that seem to good to be true again although having said that the site I did finally use delivered what they said and it didnt cost me a penny... what a complicated world we live in :-(

I know it sounds easy to be more careful and research beforehand but these days it can be so easy to get suckered in to these car scam sites and get left high and dry. Never done it myself but i know of people that have and its not a fun experience im sure.

You'd better check the frame before buying a car to Dunsford Land Rovers in Bath... They are champions to hide damaged area; that's what they did to the Land Rover I bought them 6000£ last year : the car is already broken. In two pieces. Frame was completely attacked by salt before I bought it. But I couldn't see it because of the fresh painting on the frame. I am not even talking about brakes and water pomp who were also dead... What out when you are dealing with them, Dunsford Land Rovers are liar and crooks !

Has any body bought a car on line from Used Car Sites of Stanstead Abbots. Prices very good but they want money up front before you see the car which they deliver to your address?

Never pay in advance for a used car despite how good prices are . Also if the car is so far away for you to visit and examine , how are you going to manage getting back to them if you have problems with the car .Usually best to buy local so you can deal direct if you have any faults / warranty items .Just be careful as many make their prices very attractive to draw you in .Hope this helps you .

Thanks, my thoughts entirely. I can visit the office but the car is unlikely to be there.

A friend of mine who wanted a fairly new BMW 3 series was offered an imported version of the car for the fraction of the market price. The seller wanted to take payment via Paypal only which made me a little suspicious. When i searched the internet, found loads of similar scams on autotrader.

Thanks for that warning about scammers at motormarket clairebear! The little rascals. Incidently I read the other day about a website which promises to get dealers to bid on your car and then people connected with the website ring you instead pretending to be dealers - what a bunch of dirty scammers! We should beware these sort of people.
By the way your not by any chance related to Claire Walton (Myspace account Claire Walton (♥Claire Bear♥)') and PR person for Dealerbid by any chance. If not you might know her seeing as you are local to the Dealerbid offices?

This is certainly worrying. More and more cowboys out there are trying to rob innocent buyers/sellers off.
