View Full Version : FS: Volvo 760GLE (2.8 V6 Auto) 4dr Saloon - £450/offers/exchange for smaller

VOLVO 1989 'G' Reg, 760 GLE.
4dr Saloon with the 2.8 litre V6 (6cylinder engine).
Automatic gearbox, electric everything!
(All electrics work fine aside from A/C which needs re-gassing)
Very smooth and very relaxed car, always with plenty of power to hand for
any purpose.
Silver/grey metallic paint, black leather interior, virtually immaculate
inside and very good condition outside (one or two penny-sized dings). Some
service history, current mileage 119500miles. V5 missing, but replacement is
free for new owner on application at Post Office. Short MOT (end of Nov'04)
and Tax (end of Oct'04) owing to the fact that I have to get rid of the car
given new insurance costs.
Great car, a shame to let it go, but since I acquired a speeding fine last
year, the insurance on it for me has shot up - 21 year old driver with 3
points does not make for a good combination on a group16 car!
Pictures are available on request. Email with any questions.
Any offer towards £400/450 will secure, P/X would be considered, or straight
exchange for smaller car (Cavalier sort of size - 2.0l engine max!) of
similar or lesser value.
Car is available to view in Sutton, Surrey (or Epsom) - if you wish to come
take a look round it, email me and I will provide you my contact number.
Email: wes@blobcorp.com
Many thanks,
Wes.

Wrong. 19quid from DVLA and it'll take 6 weeks. Probably
after the tax runs out.

With that mileage, only 6 weeks MOT and a missing V5 it's worth scrap
value only.

What are you on mate? 120k miles is just breaking the car in... my other
Volvo has 280k on it, same age, just the 740 equivelant with the smaller 2.3
engine.
120k is nothing on this or any other Volvo, not with a service history
listing major and/or minor service with all the main pointers to look for at
every 6month interval up until the last 12months.
"you're not a real petrolhead unless you've owned an Alfa" - that is
rubbish. They are poorly constructed, unreliable 'dozy' engines. I've had
two different alfas (company cars) and test driven 6 others and they have
all been tat. Regardless of age, stage, etc. Even brand new they feel like
you're piloting a giant dog **** on traintracks.
That is, of course, IMHO.

Its nowt to do with breaking in - 6 weeks mot and no V5 means that only
a woman (who likes the colour) and doesnt know any better would buy it
at that price :-)

That's not the point. It doesn't matter if it's 'just broken in' or not
- it's still 120k miles. Private buyers don't like 6 figure mileage.

If it's so good, then you'd put it through an MOT, with 12 months ticket
people would be willing to take a gamble on it. Without a ticket, or
only a short ticket, an old car is worth exactly what the scrappy will
pay for it as scrap.

Of course a ****e old Volvo 7 series is positively race-like in it's
performance and handling.
Face it, you're trying to sell a worthless heap of scrap. Get a 12 month
MOT on it, and someone may well be willing to buy it. As I said, with
only 6 weeks ticket on it, it's worth an absolute max. of £100.

Just looked, and it clearly states that there's a £19 fee payable. Also,
the car can't be taxed until the duplicate document has arrived.

That site quite clearly states a fee of 19 quid is payable for a lost
V5. From personal experience I can tell you it's a 6 week wait.
Oh and I sold a G reg 760GLE saloon a few mths ago for 120quid.

However, no fee is applicable if:
a.. you are using the existing registration document/certificate to notify
changes.
b.. you are the new keeper and the previous keeper has failed to notify
DVLA of the change. You must be in possession of the New keeper's Supplement
(green section) of the Registration Document/Certificate and send it to DVLA
with the V62 application form.
Take careful note of the second point. Thankyou, please call again. Did
this in the past with two cars I purchased a couple of years ago.

So you have the 'new keeper's supplement', then? - if yes, then either
you're a trader pretending to be a private buyer, or you've only had the
car a short time, in which case I'd question why you're selling it on so
quickly. Usual answer to that is that you bought a dog and want shot of
it ASAP.

I sold a 740 estate on a G at auction last year... £100, with MOT.
And it was quite tidy, even had seven seats... I just had no room for it and
it had to go.
No-one wants these really any more, in these days of ever increasing fuel
costs.
It's a fact, that most people who don't give a **** about fuel consumption,
will also not worry about depreciation etc., and have a newish car, or if
they're running something old, the gas guzzler in question is something of a
classic, or 4x4.
Doesn't the 760 have a Renault derived V6?
Ah yes, a quick scan of the net reveals it's a notoriously unreliable engine
developed in conjunction with Renault and Peugeot (who have both over the
years, produced the more inefficient V6s of their class), but which was also
used in the Metro 6R4... and the DeLorean!

Erm, I think you'll find that the 6R4 engine had more in common with a
Rover V8 with a couple of cylinders lopped off it.
Developed in conjunction with Williams GP, ISTR.

Do your own. No V5, no green slip. No green slip, no new V5 without a fee
and no tax without it or the reminder.

A couple of years ago is not March 2004.
DO YOU HAVE THE GREEN SLIP?
Have you filled it in? Then /you/ can get a V5, not the new owner. The ONLY
situation where the new owner can get the V5 WITHOUT paying is if you
somehow lost the main part of the V5 yet have a blank green slip for that
car - the 'New Keeper's Supplement'.

Bah, I just bought an admittedly tidy 7 seater 740 for £340 with 12 months
MOT - 71,000 showing, but I'm told it's actually 107,000 since it had a new
speedo. Other than needing the valve clearances set, it's not bad at all,
and copes with being driven down a railway track bed at 30mph.
However, I'm still going to sell it having used it for carting a weaving
loom, since I really want a Land Rover.

Shhh, if JackH keeps spreading that the 760's engine is a 6R4 lump, then 760
owners can claim their engine was used in the XJ220 ;)

Or of course you could tippex out the details you've already filled in and
leave the new owner to fill his/her details in. If there's any question of
why this has been done, you could suggest that the previous owner was going
to sell it to another person, but it fell through at the last minute.

Well go forth and take it up with this website then:
http://web.ukonline.co.uk/james.sumner/print740.html
I thought it a bit spurious, but couldn't think how anyone could come up
with something as bizarre, without there being a tiny bit of truth in it.

I think I'll go with a quote from Patrick Head who was part of the
design team for the 6R4:
http://www.austin-rover.co.uk/index.htm?mgrev6r4f.htm
Absolutely nothing to do with the Renault / Volvo engine.
