anyone know about conviction codes?

hi all,im pretty new here but its my first question in this room. a mate of mine has never held a driving licence but has been disqaulified a few times. only for no licence etc. anyway he's hoping to have lessons soon but thinking of insurance. when he gets is licence does he have any conviction codes on it etc? i heard if you havent held a licence and been disqaulified you get your licence clean? looked on the dvla and web sites but no info. sorry its a long question. thanks.
